The University of Newcastle, Australia was established in 1965 and is a progressive international university and one of Australia's leading research institutions.

The University operates on two main campuses. The largest campus is set on a 140 hectare natural bushland site located at Callaghan, about 12 kilometres west Newcastle city centre and about two hours drive north of Sydney.

The University also has two sites within the Newcastle C.B.D. Our School of Music and Conservatorium is located in the Civic Theatre precinct, while our School of Law, Legal Centre and Business School are located in University House. In addition to these the University's medical and nursing programs have a significant presence in major clinical, teaching, and research facilities at several hospitals and health centres.

The second main campus is located on the Central Coast at Ourimbah, on an 85 hectare site adjacent to national parkland, about halfway between Newcastle and Sydney.

The University has also established a presence in Sydney, offering Postgraduate Business programs as well as ELICOS from our location at 60 Bathurst Street, Sydney.

We offer a vast array of programs in disciplines such as education, engineering, law, science, architecture and building, computing, fine art, accounting, mathematics, economics, business, nutrition and dietetics, sociology and anthropology, philosophy, communications and information technology, to name just a few.

Practical work placement is an assessable part of many degree programs and gives graduates a competitive edge when entering the workforce. Our graduates have some of the highest starting salaries in Australia, and 82 per cent of our Bachelor degree graduates aged under 25 get a full-time job within four months of finishing their studies.

100% of our graduates in the fields of building, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and mathematics gain full-time employment within four months of completing their degree.

More than 75% of our programs are accredited with governing bodies or industry organisations and associations. This provides our graduates with opportunities for professional membership and accreditation - adding even further stature to their qualifications.

Students are offered the best in teaching and learning. The University of Newcastle pioneered problem-based learning, and this revolutionary approach now forms the basis of programs in medicine, engineering, architecture, nursing and law.

The University offers a number of preparatory programs, such as ELICOS and International Foundation, through its on-campus Language Centre.

We provide every student with an email account and access to internet services through our libraries as well as at home. There are wireless broadband zones around the Newcastle and Central Coast campuses, allowing students to use their own laptops while sitting outside or in one of the on-campus cafes.

Just under 1,000 students live on the Callaghan campus in the largest single site accommodation complex of any university in Australia including three traditional halls of residence as well as a motel style accommodation complex. Additionally, the University offers a homestay service in Newcastle.

Our students enjoy outstanding facilities including a number of large, well-stocked libraries and award winning buildings. The University offers a welfare service dedicated to our international students, careers and student employment office and a Health Service with on-site Doctors.

Students enjoy first class sporting facilities. The University's Forum Sports and Aquatic Centre houses a state of the art 50 metre indoor heated pool, an 18 metre climbing wall (the second highest in Australia), a fully equipped gymnasium, two martial arts/aerobics studios and two competition indoor courts for sports such as basketball and volleyball.

RESEARCH

Our research strengths lie in the important areas of health, energy and the environment, as well as science and engineering.

Supported by world-class facilities, our researchers are renowned for their ground-breaking discoveries. Our researchers have discovered the placental clock that determines the timing of birth, developed a viral therapy to kill cancer cells, designed mechanisms to convert pollutants into useful solid products, and revolutionised the separation of minerals and coal from wastewater.
