La Trobe University was established in 1967 and has since become one of Australia 's most respected universities. A member of the Commonwealth Association of Universities, La Trobe is also registered with the Australian Commonwealth Register of Courses for Overseas students.

La Trobe is a truly international university, teaching in Bhutan, China (including Hong Kong), France , Japan , Malaysia , Mongolia , New Zealand , Singapore and Vietnam . It has research and exchange links with more than 260 universities around the world and engages in extensive cooperative research. La Trobe is the creator and a founding member of the International Network of Universities (INU) , a group of institutions dedicated to enhancing opportunities for student mobility.

The University has a strong research profile. With more than 33 Research Institutes and Centres, it is the only Victorian university with a dedicated Institute for Advanced Study, offering research fellowships to distinguished international scholars.

Campuses
The University operates from eight campuses throughout Victoria , with three campuses offering a comprehensive range of courses to international students:
* the Bundoora campus in Melbourne
* the Bendigo campus in a regional city of 92,000 people, a little over 90 minutes drive from Melbourne, and
* the Albury-Wodonga campus located in a major regional centre, home to 105,000 people, three hours drive from Melbourne.

Study abroad program.
The Study Abroad Program at La Trobe involves undertaking a semester or a year of study at La Trobe for credit towards your home degree. Study Abroad students defer from their home institution for the period they intend to study at La Trobe and pay international student fees while studying here. Like students who come out on exchange, subjects are pre-approved in order to assist students in obtaining credit and students are issued with an official academic transcript at the end of their program.
The La Trobe Study Abroad Program allows students to live, study and work within the University's unique and diverse cultural setting.
